Hot and Cold Starting Pitchers | 7/28/2010

Wednesday's card features five total pitchers with ERA's under 3.00 in their last 5 starts that we consider to be HOT. On the flip side we have three cold pitchers. Cols pitchers are those with ERA's over 6.00 in their last 5 starts. Find out who I like for tomorrow and get Wednesday's free pick below.

Hot Starters:

Randy Wells (2-1, 34.2 IP, 1.30 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 30K)

Take Cubs -120 (1.5 Dim FREE Early Bird pick)

Randy Wells has been on fire and has a 1.29 ERA in his last three starts overall. He'll go up against Bud Norris who has a 1.42 WHIP and a 6.38 ERA in his last 3 overall starts. Wells has struggled on the road with a 2-4 record and 4.61 ERA, but has pitched much better as of late and will go for a rebound against the Astros as he gave up 6 ER in his only start against them earlier this year.

In Well defense that start came when he was struggling. He's got a good history against the Astros which has 20.1 IP in three carer starts in 2009 giving up 0 ER. Cubs never faced Norris, but the 0-4 7.13 ERA and team home record of 1-6 when he starts is nothing to be scared of. Houston just 4.21 runs per 9 over last 10 games while the Cubs come in at .305 average and 5.70 runs per 9.

Houston is just 15-42 in their last 5 as a dog between +110 and +150 and I like them to lose once again.

Roy Halladay (2-2, 40 IP, 2.25 ERA, 0.95 WHIP)

No shocker here with Roy Halladay being a hot starter. What made the list for him today was the 40 innings pitched in 5 starts. That's an average of 8 IP per start. The Phillies have started to win games again and they could make the NL east interesting with the Braves. Halladay pitches against Edwin Jackson who the Phillis have never faced.

Jackson who threw a no hitter earlier this year is struggling since as he's got a 6.75 ERA in his last 3 starts with a 1.90 WHIP. Halladay has been great at home with a 1.85 ERA and should look forward to additional run support as the Phillies started to hit in their series against the Rockies.

Diamondbacks are just 2-31 in their last 33 as dogs of more than +201. they are 13-40 overall as dogs in their last 53 games while the Phillies are 40-18 in their last 58 as -201 or greater.

Honorable Mention L5 Starts

Travis Wood (0-1, 32.2 IP, 2.76 RA, 0.92 WHIP)
Tim Hudson (3-2, 35.2 IP, 2.27 ERA, 1.01 WHIP)
Mark Buhrle (3-2, 37.1 IP, 2.41 ERA, 1.12 WHIP)

Cold Starters:

Clayton Richard (2-1, 31 IP, 6.10 ERA, 1.61 WHIP)

Richard has really done a one eighty as of late, but he'll try to rebound against a team he's had success against in his carer with just 4 ER in 11.1 IP in two career starts against the Dodgers. He'll have his hands full as his counter part Kuroda has been on fire over his last three starts with a 2.14 ERA.

Richard goes up against a Dodgers team that has struggled over their last 5 games with just a .186 average and 1.79 runs per 9 while the Padrs have scored 4.88 in their last 5 and are home for this one. Note, Richard has a 3.39 ERA at home and Kuroda has struggled against the Padres as he's given up 20 ER in 36.2 IP, but the Dodgrs are still 5-2 in thos starts. Richard will need to b his old self.

Ice Cold:

Mike Pelfrey (0-3, 19.2 IP, 10.53 ERA)
Brian Bannister (0-4, 28 IP 7.07 ERA, 1.68 WHIP)
