NHL News: Flyers Take Game One In Overtime

The Philadelphia Flyers certainly didn’t make things easy on themselves in their opening round series win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, and it doesn’t look as though anything will change against the New Jersey Devils in round two. Daniel Briere scored his second goal of the game less than five minutes in to overtime to give the Flyers the 4-3 win, with Ilya Bryzgalov making 23 saves at the other end. Meanwhile, the surprising Phoenix Coyotes took a two-game lead in their series against the Nashville Predators with a 5-3 win to sweep the first two contests at home, and will now head to Tennessee for game three on Wednesday. The Predators were considered the favorites in the series before it got underway, but Phoenix has responded with consecutive wins, scoring a combined nine goals already.

NBA News: Rondo Ejected As Celtics Fall To Hawks In Opener

As far as the Atlanta Hawks are concerned, the fact that the Boston Celtics were the hottest team in the NBA after the All Star break doesn’t mean a thing in their opening round series. The Hawks proved they wouldn’t be intimidated by the veteran Celtics on Sunday night with an 83-74 game one win, as Josh Smith registered a team-high 22 points. Celtics’ guard Rajon Rondo was ejected late in the game after bumping an official, but it doesn’t seem as though he will receive any further discipline. Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs responded to last year’s opening round exit with a statement game against the Utah Jazz, 106-91 the final. Kobe Bryant scored a game-high 31 as the Los Angeles Lakers cruised to a 103-88 win over the Denver Nuggets, while the surprising Los Angeles Clippers came back to shock the Memphis Grizzlies for a 99-98 win in a game that they trailed by 21 in heading to the fourth quarter.

News: Sabathia Helps Yankees Clinch Series Win Over Tigers

New York Yankees’ ace CC Sabathia gave up just two earned runs over eight innings, striking out eight in a 6-2 series-clinching win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The win moves New York to within two games of the Tampa Bay Rays and surprising Baltimore Orioles for top spot in the American League, after both of those teams won as well on Sunday. Meanwhile in the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies continued to struggle as Chicago Cubs’ starter Matt Garza struck out 10 in a 5-1 win, while the Milwaukee Brewers avoided a series sweep with a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Golf News: Dufner Wins Zurich Open In Thrilling Fashion

Jason Dufner hit a two-foot putt on his second playoff hole in the Zurich Open to outlast Ernie Els and win the tournament on Sunday. That birdie putt was the decisive stroke after both golfers finished the day at 19-under, two strokes ahead of world No. 1 Luke Donald. The playoff provided a thrilling finish to a great weekend of golf, marking the second time this year that Els has spoiled an excellent chance to clinch a tournament win and the third time in his past five events he has finished in the top-five. On the other hand, the win couldn’t come at a better time for Dufner, who is set to be married next week.
