News: A-Rod Elects To Have Knee Surgery

The New York Yankees will need even more from their top stars over the next couple of weeks if they are going to continue to fend off the Boston Red Sox at the top of the American League East after the All Star break after it was announced that All Star Alex Rodriguez will miss 4-to-6 weeks after undergoing knee surgery. Rodriguez has been suffering from a slight meniscus tear in his right knee, which was revealed in an MRI on Friday. While he has managed to maintain a .295 batting average with 52 RBI, Rodriguez is in the midst of the longest single-season home run drought of his career, having not hit a single bomb in 85 at-bats heading into the All Star break.

NFL News: Sides Close In On New CBA

According to sources close to the negotiations, the National Football League and its players are reportedly close to establishing the framework for a deal that could be ratified by the July 21 league meetings in Atlanta. There are several sources that have reported that the principle for a deal will be in place by this week, with the details about a rookie wage system is one of the key issues left to be solved. The timing of the deal is crucial considering that training camps are scheduled to open at the end of the month. If a deal is done by next week, it will allow for a legitimate week-long free agency period before camps open around the league, with the annual Hall of Fame game set for the first week in August.

: NHL, KHL Agree To Regulate Transition Between Leagues

The National Hockey League has reached a “memorandum of understanding” with the KHL about regulating the transition of players between the two sides. There is still no formal transfer agreement, but the two sides have agreed to honor the contracts between the leagues, which will prevent a player from playing in one while he is still under contract in the other. The agreement is effective for one year, and was signed by NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and KHL president Alexander Medvedev. The two sides had made a similar agreement before the 2010-11 season, in order to prevent defections such as Alexander Radulov’s to the KHL while he was still under contract with the Nashville Predators.

News: US Stuns Brazil, Will Meet France In Finals

The US Women’s soccer team completed a storybook comeback on Sunday, completing the first comeback from a team down a player in extra time in the history of the World Cup. Trailing Brazil 2-1 with just 10 men after a red card earlier in the game, it was Abby Wambach that headed home the tying goal in the 122nd minute to even the game for the Americans. Goalkeeper Hope Solo made a couple of big stops, including a huge save in penalty kicks that allowed Ali Krieger to score the winning goal.
