News: Japan Shocks American Women In 2011 World Cup

In a storyline that was simply too enjoyable for the rest of the world to watch, the Japanese women’s team defeated the USA in penalty kicks on Sunday to win the 2011 World Cup. Twice the American side led, including in the extra frame, and twice the Japanese came back with Homare Sawa’s goal in the 117th minute to win it. Japan would break the 2-2 tie with a 3-1 aggregate on penalty kicks to seal the victory, and although it was a disappointing night for the Americans, there was a sense that Japan was destined to win this game. In the aftermath of the earthquakes that have ripped apart the country, the Japan team gave hope to a country in dire need of something to hold on to, and they delivered the championship trophy in the end. Sawa was awarded with the Golden Ball as the player of the match as well the Golden Boot for scoring the most goals in the tournament with five. American goalkeeper Hope Solo was recognized with the Golden Glove as the tournament’s best netminder, while star Abby Wambach was named to the first All Star team.

Clarke closed the final round with an even par to remain at -5, which was good enough to deliver the memorable finish at Royal St Georges.

News: Red Sox Sneak Past Rays in 16 Innings

The Boston Red Sox needed 16 innings to get it done, but in the end they managed to pull it off as they squeezed past the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 in extra innings. Dustin Pedroia singled with two outs in the bottom of the 16th to bring in Josh Reddick from third base and Boston relied on six pitchers including starter Josh Beckett to throw the three-hitter. The Red Sox moved one-and-a-half games ahead of the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East with the win, and will now travel to take on the Baltimore Orioles this week.
