News: Red Sox Acquire Bedard, Bourn Traded To Braves Sunday

The Boston Red Sox added another starter to their rotation over the weekend, making a trade with the Seattle Mariners to acquire Erik Bedard at the MLB trade deadline. The move came on the heels of news that their deal for Rich Harden of the Oakland Athletics fell through. Boston also got a former first round pick as part of the deal, acquiring right-hander Josh Fields, without losing any major pieces. Bedard is 4-7 with a 3.45 ERA so far this season, and while those numbers aren’t awful he will need to be much more consistent for Boston. The other big trade on Sunday came when the Atlanta Braves acquired centerfielder Michael Bourn from the Houston Astros as part of a five-player deal. Bourn is expected to bat in the leadoff position for the Braves as they look to lock down an NL Wild Card spot to reach the postseason behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East.

Betting News: Jets Complete Roster Following Nnamdi Fallout

After the shocking ending to the Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes wrapped up on Friday, the New York Jets went back to work this past weekend, and signed a couple of key players to fill out their roster. On offense, the Jets elected not to re-sign Braylon Edwards, instead inking former New York Giants’ superstar Plaxico Burress to a one-year deal worth just over three million dollars. Burress will line up alongside Santonio Holmes as two big targets for quarterback Mark Sanchez, and coincidentally both are also former members of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Jets also filled the hole that they had tried to fit Asomugha in at the cornerback spot opposite of Darrelle Revis, resigning Antonio Cromartie to a four-year, $32 million deal.

NASCAR News: Menard Wins The Brickyard 400

It was a smart strategy and a little bit of luck that made all the difference at the Brickyard 400 on Sunday, as Paul Menard came out of nowhere to clinch his first victory of the season in impressive fashion. It was the stronger cars that dominated the race for the most part early on, but after debris caused a couple of cautions later on strategy played an even bigger role in the outcome. Menard’s only other NASCAR win came in the nationwide back in 2006.

Tennis News: Serena Returns With First Win Of Season

With the US Open right around the corner, Serena Williams made her return to the world stage this past weekend in dramatic fashion, clinching her first win of the year by dropping Marion Bartoli in the Bank of the West Classic final on Sunday. The 13-time major champion has missed most of the 2011 season with injuries, but if Sunday’s performance was any indication, she is definitely ready to regain her title as the best in the world beginning at the US Open this month.
