News: Newton Makes His Mark; Jets Rally For Win On 9/11 Aniversary Sunday

On an emotional opening Sunday across the NFL, more than a few big names made their mark on week one of the football season, but perhaps the most memorable will be the New York Jets’ comeback victory against the Dallas Cowboys just miles from the site where the World Trade Center towers once stood. After honoring the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the Jets struggled to get going through the first three quarters and trailed 24-10 in the fourth when Plaxico Burress scored a 26-yard touchdown that ignited the comeback. Less than seven minutes later, New York’s special teams units blocked a punt and Isiah Trufant brought it in to the endzone for the game-tying score, setting the stage for Nick Folk to nail a game-winning field goal with less than a minute to play to make it 27-24. The Jets’ comeback win was one of many exciting storylines from opening Sunday, along with Cam Newton’s 422 yards passing and two touchdowns in a 28-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, the Indianapolis Colts’ being brutalized 34-7 by the division rival Houston Texans without Peyton Manning, and the Baltimore Ravens beating up on the Pittsburgh Steelers 35-7 even with Ben Roethlisberger in the lineup for the defending AFC champions.

News: Error Could Come Back To Haunt Angels After Loss To Yankees Sunday

With the chance to win a fourth straight game and extend their winning streak to four games, the Los Angeles Angels suffered a huge blow when Peter Bourjos dropped a fly ball in the seventh inning, allowing the New York Yankees to score two key runs in a 6-5 comeback win. While the victory snapped a four-game slide for the struggling pinstripes, it also ended the Angels run as they continue to try to close the gap between them and the American League West-leading Texas Rangers, who hammered the Oakland Athletics 8-1 to open a 2.5 game lead in the division. Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox were rocked again by the Tampa Bay Rays 9-1 in another important game, and have now lost five straight, to fall 3.5 back of the Yankees in the AL East. The Red Sox have much more to worry about than catching New York, as with the win Tampa Bay moves to within 3.5 games of Boston for the AL Wild Card spot.

Tennis News: Serena Loses Cool In US Open Final; Falls To Stosur

Serena Williams suffered a tough defeat in the US Open final on Sunday, falling to Samatha Stosur in straight sets after getting in to an argument with the match official. Williams engaged in a verbal match with the official after losing a game after a point was awarded the other way after she yelled on a Stosur return, and that led to her eventual demise as she fell 6-2, 6-3.

News: Sooners Reach No. 1 For 100th Time

The Oklahoma Sooners hit a milestone in the history of the AP college football rankings on Sunday, moving to No. 1 for the 100th time in school history. The Sooners will bring that ranking in to the most important non-conference game on their schedule Saturday, as they get set to travel to No. 5 Florida State. The SEC made a small swap at the top as well in this week’s rankings, as the Alabama Crimson Tide moved to second ahead of the No. 3 LSU Tigers.
