Betting News: Flyers, Penguins Rivalry Reaches Boiling Point

Tempers flared and tensions reached their boiling point on Sunday as the Philadelphia Flyers finished a crucial 6-4 win over the Atlantic division-rival Pittsburgh Penguins to climb within a single point of fourth-place in the Eastern conference standings. The potential first-round preview was close until the third period when Philadelphia scored three straight goals to pull ahead 5-2, and after Jakub Voracek scored his second of the game to make it 6-3 with just over a minute to go in the third, things got ugly as the rivals dropped the gloves in a full line brawl. Tensions were already high after Brayden Schenn took out Sidney Crosby with a cross check from behind earlier in the game, and when the Flyers clinched the win with that sixth goal, Penguins’ head coach Dan Bylsma put his fourth line on the ice to send a message. The result was 62 total penalty minutes including Philadelphia head coach Peter Laviolette being kicked out of the game for almost climbing across to the Pittsburgh bench. What is the best part of it all? The two teams meet next Saturday in the final game of the regular season.

NBA News: Kobe Bounce Back With 40 Versus Warriors

After struggling from the field early on in a 88-85 win over the New Orleans Hornets on Saturday that Kobe Bryant helped seal with a big three-point shot towards the end of the game, there was no denying that No. 24 wanted to set the tone on Sunday when the Los Angeles Lakers hosted the Golden State Warriors. Bryant responded with 13 points in the opening quarter, and finished with 40 as the Lakers rolled to a 120-112 win over one of the association’s worst defensive teams. At the other end of the spectrum, the Boston Celtics held the Miami Heat to just 72 points in a 91-72 win, with Rajon Rondo scoring 16 points and adding 11 assists, while Paul Pierce scored a game-high 26.

NASCAR News: Newman Comes Through In Exciting Martinsville Race

In a wild and crazy finish at one of NASCAR’s most dangerous tracks, it was Ryan Newman who came through with his first Sprint Cup Series win at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday. It appeared as though it would come down to a battle between Hendrick Motor Sports’ teammates Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon until the two collided with one another and both lost control, which opened the door for Newman to take the lead on a final restart for his first win in 23 races.

News: Mets Announce Santana As Opening Day Starter

The New York Mets have named Johan Santana their opening day starter, placing him at the top of their starting rotation despite that he hasn’t pitched in a regular season game since September of 2010. Santana underwent surgery last year to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder, but after some intensive work this past offseason, will be ready to take the mound this Thursday against the Atlanta Braves, marking the fourth time he has been the opening day starter for the Mets.
