NHL News: Penguins, Canucks Both Eliminated; Defending Champs Force Game Seven

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks were among the favorites to reach the Stanley Cup in their respective conferences this year, and now they are among the first teams to be eliminated. The Penguins simply couldn’t handle the Philadelphia Flyers’ relentless attack in a 5-1 loss on Sunday afternoon, a game in which they trailed 2-0 after the first period and never really came close to winning. Meanwhile, the Vancouver Canucks forced the Los Angeles Kings to overtime in game five of their best-of-seven series, but a goal by Jarret Stoll less than five minutes in to the extra frame ended any chance of the Canucks getting back to the finals for a second consecutive year. While Pittsburgh and Vancouver couldn’t get the job done, the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins staved off elimination and forced a game seven in their opening round series against the Washington Capitals with a 4-3 overtime win. Tyler Seguin scored the overtime winner just 3:17 in to the extra frame, sending the series back to Boston for game seven on Tuesday.

News: Rangers Tame Tigers With Controversial Squeeze Bunt

Anyone who put money on the Detroit Tigers in their series finale against the Texas Rangers this past Sunday had to have been livid about the final result, a 3-2 Tigers’ loss in extra innings that was decided by a squeeze bunt that actually bounced off the leg of Alberto Gonzalez and brought in the winning run. Detroit manager Jim Leyland argued the play but was unable to change anything about the final score, which will only add to the debate about instant replay in baseball. Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3, sending them to their 10th straight loss, and the Colorado Rockies spoiled Ryan Braun’s MVP celebration with a 4-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

NBA News: World Peace Ejected in Lakers’ 2OT Win Over Thunder

The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 114-106 in double overtime on Sunday, but the real storyline from the game was the vicious elbow that Lakers’ forward Metta World Peace hit Thunder guard James Harden with in the side of the head. World Peace threw down a dunk with time running down in the second quarter, and then after beating his chest in celebration gave a shot right to the side of Harden’s head that sent him to the floor. World Peace was assessed a flagrant-2 foul and ejected from the game, and while he was quick to apologize for his actions after the game and call them an accident, he should be hearing from the NBA soon and a suspension isn’t unlikely.

Tennis News: Nadal Breezes Past Djokovic In Monte Carlo Masters

Although it may not have been at a major tournament, Rafael Nadal scored a notable victory on Sunday when he thrashed the top-ranked Novak Djokovic in straight-sets to win the Monte Carlo Masters tournament. The victory snapped a skid of seven-straight defeats to his rival in title matches, and should at the very least serve as a confidence boost going forward for the rest of the tennis season.
