The American League pennant race continued to unfold last night in New York with the Yankees toppling the Toronto Blue Jays 9-3 to extend their division and pennant lead over the Boston Red Sox, which fell 11-4 to the Texas Rangers. The win for the Yankees combined with the Red Sox loss opened the deficit to 1.5 games, and left Boston with two more losses. In the National League, the Milwaukee Brewers moved one step closer to clinching the Central with a 4-0 win over the Houston Astros to complete the three-game road sweep, with Ryan Braun going three-for-three with three RBI as he took over the NL-lead in batting average with a .335 mark.

News: Bears Waste Little Time Landing Meriweather

Competing in a division that includes the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers and two improved teams in the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings will make it difficult for the Chicago Bears to repeat as NFC North champions, but they did make a move on Sunday that could help. The Bears wasted little time signing former New England Patriots’ Pro Bowl safety Brandon Meriweather to a one-year deal. The signing comes after both Craig Steltz and Chris Conte were injured in Chicago’s preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns.

Tennis News: Nadal Overcomes Cramps As US Open

The defending US Open champion put on quite the show over the weekend at Flushing Meadows, overcoming severe leg cramps to beat 2002 Wimbledon runner-up David Nalbandian in straight sets on a humid afternoon. Nadal won 7-6 (5), 6-1, 7-5 to move on, but the leg cramps were so bad when they attacked him again during a news conference that he had to leave his podium chair and sit on the floor as trainers brought him ice packs and Gatorade. What his condition will be going forward is in the air, but Nadal certainly is wary. Among the other players that advanced are Andy Murray, David Ferrer, and Gilles Simon, as well as the first quartet to reach the US Open fourth round since 2003 that includes Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, and John Isner.
