Tennis News: Venus Goes Down In Wimbledon Opener

For the first time since her debut appearance at the All-England Club 15 years ago, Venus Williams was eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon on Monday. The seven-time Grand Slam champion, who has won five times at Wimbledon, was upset 6-1, 6-3 by Elena Vesnina of Russia, the latest setback for Williams after being diagnosed with an energy-sapping, auto-immune disease. Williams, who has fallen to 58th in the world rankings, dropped the first five games in the match and was never able to recover.

News: Youkilis Traded To White Sox

Winners of eight of their last 10, the Boston Red Sox decided to move Kevin Youkilis to the Chicago White Sox for utility man Brent Lillibridge and relief pitcher Zach Stewart. The move comes only days after Youkilis sounded off about how unhappy he was to have not been in the Red Sox lineup the past couple of days, adding to the fire that has burned in Boston over the last month with players stepping up and voicing their displeasure in the direction of the team. With Will Middlebrooks batting .326 with nine home runs and 34 RBI in just 41 games, the injury-plagued Youkilis, who has hit just .233 with four home runs on the year became expendable.

NBA News: Trade Talks Heat Up With Draft Only Days Away

With the NBA draft only days away, the speculation around possible trades has really heated up over the past couple of days. After news broke that the Houston Rockets were willing to part ways with point guard Kyle Lowry in exchange for a top-10 pick, there was a follow up to that story that involved the Rockets looking to acquire picks in an effort to trade for Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard. Howard has not signed any extensions so that appears to be a risky move, especially with the Brooklyn Nets looking to add both Howard and extend Deron Williams’ contract as the team gets set to move to New York. There was more news out of Chicago Monday about the potential for Luol Deng to be moved from the Bulls, with teams looking to make deals in the days leading up to the draft.

NASCAR News: Bowyer Wins First Road Race At Sonoma

Clint Bowyer held off Kurt Busch for his first road race win at Sonoma on Sunday, finally breaking through with a win after finishing fourth in three previous races on the same course. Bowyer dominated with 71 laps led, and was able to hold off the defending champion Busch to get to Victory Lane. It was a strong day all around for the Michael Waltrip Racing team, with Brian Vickers finishing fourth as well. The win moves Bowyer up to seventh in the Sprint Cup standings, just four points back of Tony Stewart for fifth place overall heading in to next weekend’s race at the Kentucky Speedway.
